The famous Hollywood diva, Jamie Lee Curtis, has won the hearts of movie lovers worldwide with her brilliant performances in numerous blockbusters over the past five decades. Alongside her undeniable acting talent, she captured the admiration of many with her flawless figure. Throughout her long career, her signature short haircut became a trademark she rarely changed. However, Jamie Lee Curtis’ personal life has been marked by many ups and downs, as well as controversial stories.
Addiction to Alcohol and Opiates
For many years, the famous actress struggled with addiction to painkillers, which she became hooked on after an unsuccessful cosmetic surgery. Reflecting on this period, Curtis commented that undergoing cosmetic surgery to remove her under-eye bags was a terrible experience.
Following the procedure, she initially began taking opioids for pain relief, but over time, they became a habit, and she also started consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.
“I was addicted twice—once due to pain, and the second time out of shame for being addicted,” the actress once admitted, as reported by foreign media.
A Devastating Family Tragedy
Curtis’ family also struggled with substance abuse issues, including her father, who had a history of drug use. Tragically, Jamie endured a profound loss when her brother passed away at the age of 23 due to a heroin overdose.
“I knew my dad had problems, and I had my own. We shared drugs. There were times when I was the only child who wanted to talk to him. I had six siblings; now, I have five. My brother Nicholas died from a heroin overdose at just 23,” Curtis revealed in an interview, according to Nova.
While battling her own addiction, Jamie would hide drugs from her brother and sister, who tried to help her stay on track.
A Wake-Up Call from Her Daughter
Despite the painful lessons learned from her brother’s death, Curtis’ addiction persisted. However, years later, she realized how destructive her behavior had become, not only for herself but for her family. This realization prompted her to seek treatment for her addiction. Curtis once shared that a pivotal moment in her recovery journey was a comment made by her then-eight-year-old daughter, who pointed out that her mother was never there for her. That remark became the turning point for the actress, bringing her back to reality.
