The exact number of casualties is still unknown, but reports indicate that 14 survivors have been taken to local hospitals, five of whom are in intensive care. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist with firefighting and rescue efforts.

The Embraer E190AR issued an emergency call at 2,125 feet (647.7 meters) over the Caspian Sea. The report said the incident may have been caused by a collision with a bird and failure of the steering system.

The flight had been diverted to Makhachkala due to heavy fog. At least 60 Russians were believed to be on board.

On December 25, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane en route from Baku to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.

Russian news agencies said the plane had to divert due to fog in Grozny. Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 was carrying 62 passengers and five crew members.

There were 25 survivors, 22 of whom were hospitalized, Kazakhstan’s Health Ministry said. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry said 42 people may have died. At least 10 people were reported to have been thrown from the cabin.

The plane made an “emergency landing” about 3km (2 miles) from Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea, and crashed after some of its control and backup systems failed, Interfax news agency reported. There were no official details on the cause of the crash. Kazakh officials said more than 50 rescue workers were at the scene and were extinguishing the fire.

Footage of the crash showed the plane burst into flames as it hit the ground, with thick black smoke billowing into the air. Meanwhile, images of the scene showed the commercial plane had broken into pieces after falling from a height of thousands of metres.

Another dramatic clip shows the pilot pulling the plane out of a vertical drop as he tries to regain control, but the plane still crashes catastrophically and explodes in flames.

The two main crash sites at Aktau airport are hundreds of meters apart. Body parts from the horrific accident are scattered across the ground at the airport.

Dazed and bloodied passengers were seen emerging from the severed rear of the plane. Some sat on the ground in a state of shock after escaping the plane. Others tried to walk out. Meanwhile, the front of the plane – torn off by the impact – could be seen burning in the distance.
