The lonely, reclusive old age of the ‘golden girl’ of the ABBA band.

Agnetha Faltskog – the iconic female singer of the 1980s – is now a quiet U70 lady living on a small island in Sweden.

The four members of the ABBA group recently had a rare reunion at a party in Stockholm, Sweden on June 5th. At the end of the event, the two female singers, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, sang a few lines in their famous songs together.

As the performance neared its end, the two male members, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, stepped onto the stage to sing along. It was just a brief moment of reunion, but something that ABBA fans had been eagerly waiting for many years since the band disbanded in 1982.

However, fans are hoping for more, looking forward to a true reunion of the band on stage with their iconic songs or new projects.

Yet, this is deemed entirely unlikely. Partly because they don’t need the money (all members possess substantial wealth) and a crucial factor being the lead singer, Agnetha, has never been keen on a reunion.

Agnetha Faltskog – one of the most charming and talented icons of the pop music scene back then – has long preferred a quiet life, away from fans, stage lights, interviews, or socializing with others.

The 66-year-old singer is living discreetly on a large estate in the outskirts of Ekero – an island near Stockholm. Since her relationship with the wealthy businessman Bertil Nordstrom ended in 2008, Agnetha moved in with her 43-year-old daughter Linda, son-in-law, and three grandchildren.

Her daily pleasures are quite simple: a cold glass of Chablis, strolls with her two beloved dogs, listening to the waves lapping – things she describes as “essential” for her happy life.

Regarding music? An employee in Agnetha’s management company said that she has no plans to release any music products and does not want to mention anything about an ABBA reunion.

But what led Agnetha from being a globally renowned star to seek such a secluded life?

Agnetha was born in 1950 in Sweden, gaining fame at the age of 17 with a solo career. The singer met Bjorn on a TV show, fell deeply in love, and got married in 1971.

A year later, Agnetha and Bjorn, along with the duo Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, formed the band ABBA (an abbreviation of their names).

The love of the two couples went hand in hand with continuous successes in their band’s career, from winning the Eurovision contest to having best-selling albums worldwide.

In 1974, Agnetha and Bjorn welcomed their first daughter, Linda. Three years later, their son Christian was born.

However, life was not always smooth. Agnetha and Bjorn divorced in 1979, shocking ABBA fans. While they claimed to have parted amicably, Bjorn was seen with another woman.

After the breakup, Agnetha admitted feeling “lost” after her marriage ended and had to seek psychological counseling.

The band continued to operate in the following years. In 1981, the duo Benny and Anni-Frid also split. After a tour, they returned to the recording studio but realized that true joy and connection among ABBA members could not exist with both couples divorced.

Agnetha had the most challenging circumstances among the four members. As a single mother, she felt guilty leaving her children to perform.

Invisible worries began to overwhelm her. Fear of flying after their private plane almost crashed in a storm led to a fear of all types of transportation. Agnetha also feared the fanaticism of fans, always imagining their cheers as disapproval rather than admiration.

After ABBA disbanded in 1982, Agnetha only pursued a solo career for a few years before retreating into seclusion. For many years, she even lost interest in listening to music. Over the decades, she still preferred a quiet life with her children.

When Agnetha resurfaced in the dating scene, her name made headlines again. Agnetha had a short-lived affair with detective Thorbjorn Brander, who investigated threats to abduct her children.

In 1990, Agnetha secretly married plastic surgeon Tomas Sonnenfeld. Three years later, she admitted to the romance as the couple was preparing for a divorce.

Around this time, Agnetha also had to cope with the shock of her mother’s suicide. Birgit jumped from their apartment due to dissatisfaction with her alcoholic husband. A year later, Agnetha’s father passed away. However, at that time, the singer did not dare to reveal the truth about her parents’ deaths.

A strange incident in Agnetha’s private life occurred in 1997 when she dated an obsessed fan who stalked her. Gert van der Graaf, a Dutch truck driver, followed Agnetha in Sweden for 2 years, prompting her to involve the police.

However, she later fell in love with him: “He cared so intensely that I couldn’t resist anymore. I wanted to know about him,” Agnetha explained.

But in 2000, Agnetha accused Van der Graaf of abusing her, and the truck driver was deported from Sweden. In the following years, he still secretly visited Agnetha’s home several times and was arrested in 2006.

In 2004, Agnetha surprisingly released an album covering hits from her singing career’s beginnings. Along with the album’s resounding success, Agnetha found new love with Bertil Nordstrom, a wealthy friend of the Swedish king. Bertil even bought her a dream villa to live in. However, their relationship ended three years later.

Since then, Agnetha has not dated anyone else. She enjoys her grandchildren and bonds with her two beloved dogs, as “dogs always give unconditional love to humans and are absolutely loyal. They know when you’re sad, tired. They will look at you to understand and come to comfort.”

In 2013, Agnetha made a comeback with the album “A” when songwriter Jorgen Elofsson invited her to perform his songs.

However, the U70 singer declined to promote the album and make public appearances. In a rare interview, Agnetha expressed:

“I’m not interested in appearing in magazines, on television, and in every newspaper. Many people think I want to create a mysterious atmosphere around my life. But I just don’t want that. I’ve done enough and just want peace.”
